The Cabinet of Lightby Daniel O'Mahony |
The four best Dr Who books this year have been published by Telos and the best of those is "The Cabinet of Light". This is a fantastic book, with gorgeous prose, striking imagery, strong characters and a sophisticated tale.
It's a grim story, both unlike most Who and yet with more to say about Who than most. It's an original story: I can suggest influences like "Swamp Thing" and "Donnie Darko", but it isn't as close to its sources as Aaronovitch and Banks or Miles and Morrison.
It's a subtle story. It's a witty story. O'Mahony didn't write this as a pilot, yet it's as good a beginning as the Time Hunter series could wish for. Look, just go buy it, OK?
